Artist Statement My goal as an artist is to recreate feelings of joy, excitement and wonder at the sometimes fleeting moments in life and nature. This could be a vast panoramic or a single flash of colour, sparkle or motion in a scene. The challenge is to convey these sensations, using a limited number of colours, on a small two dimensional surface. Sometimes I achieve this through representational paintings, but more often through varying degrees of simplification and abstraction. My primary objective is to convey the emotional impact these moments have on me.Robert
Art Background My art education has been self-directed. I credit my knowledge of art to many sources. I have studied countless books and periodicals on technique, theory and history as well as taken workshops and courses of specific interest to me. I have had the opportunity to examine and enjoy the original works of the great masters at museums and galleries around the world. I have developed as an artist by sharing experiences, discussing works and techniques with my artist friends and of course through practice.  Growing up I loved to draw but was guided away from art towards a path that would offer greater financial security. However, twenty years ago my interest in drawing was rekindled while visiting Paris, where I had the opportunity to view some of my favourite works in the city’s many celebrated galleries. I was deeply moved by the very large works by Monet in the L’Orangerie and Marmottan Museums. I took up drawing once again and began to paint and have been following my artistic pursuits on a full time basis. since 2006.  I paint with oils, acrylics and watercolours. My works are inspired by the many sites, sounds and people I have encountered in my extensive travels and by the tranquility, peace and oneness with nature that I experience in my kayak outings. I paint “en plein air” wherever and whenever possible, as I have always been an outdoor enthusiast. This allows me to combine both passions. When outdoors, I usually paint small studies and sketches on boards and do larger works on canvas in my studio on Canotek road. I credit painting with providing me with an enhanced capacity to see and interpret the world in new and various ways.  My works can be viewed at my studio on Canotek Road by appointment,
